Last Day and Information

 

Good afternoon,

We have come to the end of the school year and have much to celebrate! Our students have made great progress, our school has a new strategic plan, we have a newly formed PTA, and we have hired fantastic staff to join us in the next school year. I’d like to share just a few additional highlights. 

I'm happy to announce that we have hired four teachers who will join the LPS team next year, and we look forward to years of collaboration and learning together. 

Michelle Lazar comes to us from Grand Traverse Academy where she has been teaching elementary school since 2007. Michelle has also served as an instructional coach, and will be teaching on the 1st/2nd grade team next year. Michelle has a BS in Elementary Education from CMU and a Masters in Instruction, Assessment, and Curriculum from Marygrove College. Michelle's two children will also be joining us next year!

Sarah Rivers Smith will be joining us from Suttons Bay where she has been serving as a special education teacher since 2019. Sarah started her career in 2008 and has worked overseas and downstate. She will be teaching special education for us and is a Leland grad! Sarah has a BS in Education and Masters of Education from GVSU. 

Ashley Heyboer, another Leland alum and LPS parent, will be joining us as a special education teacher. Ashley has spent the last seven of her 16-year teaching career at Creekside as a center-based teacher. Ashley holds a Bachelors of Education from Aquinas College and a Masters of Special Education from UM Dearborn. 

And our very own Bailey Duperon, long-term sub extraordinaire, will be joining us as a full-time teacher on the 1st/2nd grade team! Bailey's kids attend LPS, her husband Bill is on our school board and is an LPS alum, and she is an integral member of our school community. Bailey holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from UM and a Masters of Arts in Social Work from the University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration. 

We are incredibly lucky that these outstanding people will be joining us.

Additionally, we have some internal changes as well. 

  • Nick Seguin will be moving to the middle school to teach social studies
  • Karen Kirt will be teaching on the 3rd/4th team
  • Kim Fowler will be teaching Title I interventions for K-8th graders
  • Eryn Sluiter will be teaching K-5 art and music and middle school study skills
  • Kevin Blohm has accepted a position with Northwest Education Services as a School Psychologist. He is assigned to LPS so he will be here weekly and will continue to develop relationships with students as a Bridge mentor.

And we say goodbye to Dr. Dave. Dr. Dave has accepted a head of school position in Rabat, Morocco, and will be moving overseas. We are so grateful for all of his work, his commitment to our students, and his positive energy that he shared with all of us at LPS. We wish him well on his adventure!

Please have your students go through your homes, bedrooms, cars for school materials. We need athletic uniforms, library books, classroom books, technology, etc… Materials can be returned to the main office. 

Report cards will be mailed by the end of next week.

This summer, we will be continuing our facilities work, hosting four weeks of elementary enrichment, refining our new secondary schedule, and working on updated procedures around attendance and cell phone use. Stay tuned!

As we reflect on the year and the beautiful normalcy we experienced, we are excited for our students and staff for next year. Please hold the late afternoon-early evening of Thursday, August 31st for our Farm to Table Family Open House.  

I’ll be reaching out again in August with more information about other day-to-day operational details. Until then, wishing you a fun, exciting, and restful summer.

¡Hemos llegado al final del año escolar y tenemos mucho que celebrar! Nuestros estudiantes han hecho un gran progreso, nuestra escuela tiene un nuevo plan estratégico, tenemos una PTA recién formada y hemos contratado personal fantástico para que se una a nosotros en el próximo año escolar. Me gustaría compartir solo algunos puntos destacados adicionales.

Me complace anunciar que hemos contratado a cuatro maestros que se unirán al equipo de LPS el próximo año y esperamos años de colaboración y aprendizaje juntos.

Michelle Lázaro proviene de Grand Traverse Academy, donde ha estado enseñando en la escuela primaria desde 2007. Michelle también se ha desempeñado como entrenadora de instrucción y enseñará en el equipo de primer y segundo grado el próximo año. Michelle tiene una licenciatura en Educación Primaria de CMU y una Maestría en Instrucción, Evaluación y Currículo de Marygrove College. ¡Los dos hijos de Michelle también se unirán a nosotros el próximo año!

Sarah Ríos Smith se unirá a nosotros desde Suttons Bay, donde se ha desempeñado como maestra de educación especial desde 2019. Sarah comenzó su carrera en 2008 y ha trabajado en el extranjero y en el sur del estado. ¡Ella nos enseñará educación especial y se graduó de Leland! Somos increíblemente afortunados de que estas personas sobresalientes se unan a nosotros.

Además, también tenemos algunos cambios internos.

Welcome Kile Charnes!

 

Good morning, 

I am thrilled to announce that Kile Charnes will be joining LPS on July 1st as the new K-12 principal. Kile brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our community and has built a network of positive regional and local relationships that will help enhance our programming and advance our strategic plan goals. 

Kile will be taking over the reins from Dr. David Botbyl who has been serving LPS this year as the interim principal. Dr. Dave, as he is affectionately called, has done a tremendous job this year and will be working with Kile during the transitional period in June. 

Kile will be joining us from Mesick Consolidated Schools where has been serving as the elementary principal since 2017. Prior to that, Kile served for four years as the middle and high school principal, athletic director, director of transportation, and dean of students at Buckley Community Schools. He holds a Bachelors of Arts from Saginaw Valley State University where he earned his K-12 teaching certificate in physical education and health/biology, and a K-12 school administration certificate from Central Michigan University where he earned his Masters of Arts in School Administration. Kile was also a founding teacher at Traverse City College Preparatory Academy where he also served as athletic director. 

Kile has extensive experience in all aspects of K-12 administration that will support our small community school’s vision and mission. He has served his community and schools in diverse roles from coaching Little League baseball, football, and basketball to serving as his district’s Homeland Security Coordinator and overseeing curriculum development. He commented that, “I am excited for the opportunity to work with the students, staff, and community of Leland Public Schools. Leland Schools has a strong tradition of excellence in academics, the fine arts, and athletics, to name a few, and I can't wait to get started in helping to grow these programs even more.  I look forward to meeting everyone, building positive relationships, and continuing to make Leland Public School a leader in education. Go Comets!” 

Kile and his wife, Samantha, are the proud parents Ellie,15 and Miles 13. Kile will be here on Thursday, May 18th, from 5:00 - 6:00 pm for an informal meet and greet in the high school library for our parents, students, and community to get to know him. That night, we also have the fifth grade IB culminating exhibition at 6:00 pm in the upstairs elementary school followed by the high school Cabaret at 7:00 in the PAC if you can make any or all of these exciting events at LPS. Estoy encantado de anunciar que Kile Charnes se unirá a LPS el 1 de julio como el nuevo director de K-12. Kile aporta una gran cantidad de experiencia y conocimientos a nuestra comunidad y ha creado una red de relaciones regionales y locales positivas que ayudarán a mejorar nuestra programación y avanzar en los objetivos de nuestro plan estratégico.

Kile tomará las riendas del Dr. David Botbyl, quien ha estado sirviendo a LPS este año como director interino. El Dr. Dave, como se le llama cariñosamente, ha hecho un gran trabajo y trabajará con Kile durante el período de transición en junio.

Kile se unirá a nosotros desde Mesick Consolidated Schools, donde se ha desempeñado como director de primaria desde 2017. Kile y su esposa, Samantha, son los orgullosos padres de Ellie, 15 y Miles 13. Kile estará aquí el jueves 18 de mayo, de 5:00 a 6:00 p. m. para un encuentro informal en la biblioteca de la escuela secundaria para nuestro padres, estudiantes y comunidad para conocerlo. Thank you and Thoughts on MSU

Happy Valentine’s Day, 

I hope this letter finds you enjoying the comfort of love from your friends and family. We sure felt the love last night at our fundraiser for Cecily and Jane in memory of Evie.Thank you so much for your attendance, support, and community fellowship! We are truly blessed to live in a community that will drop everything to rally for those in need. I’m grateful to everyone who planned, cooked, donated, worked, attended, or supported such a wonderful event. Your generosity of spirit, talents, and resources is such a gift!

It is also these gifts that we cling to in times of distress. We are feeling the effects and trauma of yet another school shooting, this one in our own backyard, which has impacted so many of us who have friends and loved ones at MSU. I wish I had the words to make everyone feel better.

We talk to our kids about getting involved, getting connected to something larger than themselves, seeking help when they struggle and support when they need it in order to ensure that they are not alone or isolated. We hope this is enough to keep them safe, but we know that often it’s not. We pray for peace and comfort for the victims and their loved ones as they process every family’s worst nightmare, and we hold fast to our connections as a community that provide the support and love we all need and crave. My hope and wish is that we find a way to reach all those who need us and that we succeed in teaching peace so that not one more person ever feels the devastating loss of a child and the trauma of these events.

Winter Break Update December 2022

Dear Leland Families, 

As the calendar year comes to a close and we head off soon for the holiday break, I’d like to communicate about some developments here at Leland. Please read carefully for links, surveys, an application, and other important information. 

As mentioned last fall, our Strategic Planning process began last winter and is continuing. 

To date we have:

  1. Revived the school improvement team and met throughout last winter and spring to examine our mission, vision, values, and core identity as a school community  
  2. Collected survey data from students, teachers, and parents and shared it with our strategic planning partners at Northwest Education Services
  3. Introduced Northwest Ed’s team to the board of education and community, and they conducted focus groups in September to collect more data
  4. They have developed additional survey questions based on the feedback from the focus groups 

Next Steps: 

  1. Initiate full-scale community survey: Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond to the appropriate survey linked below. As you complete the survey, please know you may skip a question if you are unfamiliar with the topic or uncomfortable providing a response.

Please complete the appropriate survey. 

  1. We will then have a strategic planning workshop in February with the board, staff, and school improvement team member representatives which includes students and parents to develop a draft strategic plan based on all of the data and information we have collected. 
  2. By March, we will finalize and launch a new strategic plan that will guide our work at LPS for the next three years.

We have also revived a PTO here at school. Parents Stacey Brugeman and Emily Miezo are spearheading that effort. If you’d like to participate, please let them know by emailing them at the new PTO email address [email protected].  Look for PTO information from this email. 

As you may have read in the Leelanau Enterprise, Bridge Club chairwoman and newly elected board member Mary Flieshman is reviving the Bridge Club mentor program which has been on hiatus since COVID. Mary is recruiting volunteers willing to commit to meeting with a student once a week to provide a safe, trusted adult for students who would benefit from an additional support person in their lives. If you are interested in becoming a Bridge Mentor, please reach out to Mary at [email protected]

Our kindergartners are also benefiting from the Web Readers who come in and read with them each week. Contact Corinn Kowalski or Beth Osorio if you’d like to read to our kindergarten students and they will connect you to Tanya Popp, our volunteer coordinator. 

Our five-year International Baccalaureate re-authorization process was completed December 5-7, and it went amazingly well! Our evaluation team was incredibly impressed, sang the praises of our program and teachers, and offered insight into areas that we can continue to develop. It was a rousing endorsement of our PYP and school. 

We also have some ongoing curriculum review processes happening. 

  • Our 6-12 grades social studies curriculum review process which began last winter is continuing as teachers pilot two different sets of materials. That process should wrap up by the end of the school year, and they will make a recommendation to the social studies curriculum committee or ask for additional materials to consider. 
  • Our two Spanish teachers are also in the process of initiating a curriculum review process to replace outdated and old materials. 
  • Last, in compliance with board policy and state laws, we will be forming a Sex Education Advisory Board and beginning the process of selecting a comprehensive K-12 sex education curriculum. If you’d like to serve on that advisory board, please fill out this application. 

Finally, I’m happy to announce that Tim McNeil has resumed duties as our Transportation Director. Mike Urbano at Suttons Bay did a fantastic job of serving our students during the COVID crisis, and we are so grateful for the collaborative partnership we have with Suttons Bay. COVID and Health Update

Dear Families, 

As we move into winter, I wanted to take a moment to provide a brief COVID update. You have been receiving email updates from our nurse, Stephanie Burns, when we have confirmed, positive, school–related COVID cases. Per our board policy on communicable diseases and current MDHHS guidelines, these updates are provided for your information. 

The current guidelines for someone who tests positive for COVID require a 5-day isolation followed by 5 days of masking. There are no longer quarantine requirements for exposures or close contacts. 

Recommended precautionary behaviors to diminish the spread of communicable diseases include:

  • Wash hands frequently and/or use hand sanitizer
  • Monitor for symptoms and stay home if symptomatic
  • Distance yourself and/or wear a mask when around those with diagnosed COVID or other easily transmitted diseases
  • Utilize at-home testing kits
  • Report positive, confirmed cases to the school
  • Avoid indoor, crowded, social gatherings 
  • Stay current with vaccinations

We have returned to pre-COVID precautionary measures that are applicable for an outbreak of any communicable disease. School closures historically occur when student/staff attendance falls below 75%. 

We remain humble and flexible as new information becomes available, ready to pivot in extreme situations, and incredibly grateful to be conducting school in a way that feels normal, safe, and consistent.

Good afternoon, 

The road commission has notified us that Grand Ave. between Pearl Street and William Street will be closed Monday through Wednesday for road repairs. All car traffic will need to use the drop off line in the back of the building on Fourth Street. There will be no parking on Grand Avenue in front of the elementary school either. Students and staff wishing to park in the PAC parking lot will need to enter the lot from Second Street. Parking is also available in the athletic parking lot in back.

Welcome New Interim Principals

 

Dear Families, 

I’m so excited to be able to announce that we have two fantastic school leaders who have agreed to serve our school for the foreseeable future sharing the duties as interim principal. Mr. Mike Hartigan, a Leland institution, started this past week, and Dr. David Botbyl, new to our area, will begin tomorrow. We are so fortunate and happy to have them both.

Mike earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University. He has held both K-12 administrative and superintendent certifications and spent his first 14 years in education working for Fennville Public Schools. His roles included lead teacher/counselor in an alternative and adult education program, outreach worker, building administrator for migrant services, assistant middle school principal, and athletic director. In 1988, the Hartigan family moved to Leland where Mike served 12 years as the K-12 building principal and 10 years as superintendent for Leland Public School. His wife Jean also taught lower elementary creative arts here for a number of years. Both of their children are LPS graduates and work in the “family business” as educators. Jennifer is a Washington University- Saint Louis graduate and teaches English in Ladue, Missouri. Brian, a University of Michigan graduate, serves as an elementary principal in Wyoming, Michigan.

Dr. David Botbyl has thirty years of teaching and leadership experience in both public and international schools. He has spent the last 17 years overseas in a K-12 international school most recently as the head of school. He has 15 years of International Baccalaureate experience at Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma Programme levels, and 11 years of leadership/teaching experience in grades 6-8 in the United States. He has also served as a dean of students and principal for both elementary and middle schools in addition to his head of school experiences. 
He holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Wilkes University, an M.S. in Educational Leadership and Supervision from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a B.A. from Central Michigan University with majors in French and German. Additionally, he holds multiple administrative certificates including a K-12 Superintendent license from the State of Kentucky,  K-12 Administrator and Teaching Certifications in Michigan, and PK-12 Administrator and Teacher Certifications in Wisconsin. Dr. Dave and his wife, who is also an educator, have raised two children and live in Traverse City.

Welcome Back!

 

Welcome Back! Bienvenido de Nuevo!

It's here! The new school year begins tomorrow, and we could not be happier to be welcoming new and returning students and families back to the building. We have been busy all summer getting ready for you. This year already feels different, and it's going to be fantastic!

Please review the pick-up and drop-off information that was emailed earlier this summer. Cars in back on Fourth St., foot traffic in front on Grand Ave., and bus drop off on Pearl. Just as a helpful tip, all messages are also posted online under SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE for future reference.

Students should arrive at 8:00 am if they will be having breakfast, and 8:10 am if they will be heading straight to class. Middle and high school students will pick up their schedules in the Legacy Gym and then head to the new gym for a morning welcome.  

There will be lots of questions and nerves and excitement this first week. We'll all help each other, be patient and extend grace to one another, and I hope to see you at the Farm to Table Open House on Thursday at 5:30 pm!

Have a great night, and let's all keep our kids and staff in our thoughts for a meaningful, healthy, happy school year at LPS!

¡Esta aquí! El nuevo año escolar comienza mañana, y no podríamos estar más felices de dar la bienvenida al edificio a los estudiantes y familias nuevos y que regresan. Llevamos todo el verano ocupados preparándonos para ti. ¡Este año ya se siente diferente, y va a ser fantástico!

Welcome to another exciting school year at Leland Public School!  We are looking forward to welcoming our new and returning students when school begins on Tuesday, September 6th. It is an absolute privilege to be a part of a community where parents, teachers, and students care for each other and strive to build positive relationships that support academic success and social growth.  Para encontrar este documento en español, lea a continuación.

We are still in the process of hiring our next principal, so until then, I will be acting as principal. If we move forward with an interim principal while we continue our search, we’ll get an introduction out as soon as possible. 

Please read this note very carefully. It is chock-full of information to help you navigate the opening of school and answer as many questions as you might have as possible. 

Grade level teams have prepared welcome letters for their students. Please take a moment to read through the letters appropriate for your family to learn more about the expectations for the start of the year and school supply information: 

You will be receiving additional information about the 2022-2023 school year as our staff returns to school over the next few weeks. Here are a few items to keep in mind:

Please click here for our Yearly Calendar. As you schedule family vacations, please pay careful attention to our holiday breaks to ensure that students are in school when LPS is in session. 

Elementary class lists will be posted on the front door of the school after 4:00 PM on Friday, August 26th. Secondary students will receive their schedules in the Legacy Gym when they arrive on September 6th.

Fall sports are already in action. You can follow along and find information about competition dates and times on our school website. 

School arrival and departure information can be found here. Information regarding bus stops and times will be shared with families of bus riders by our transportation director Mike Urbano soon. Be sure to fill out the transportation form if you need to access bussing. 

Save the Date! A farm-to-table dinner and school open house will be held on Thursday, September 8th from 5:30-7:30 PM. Rain date Tuesday, September 13th. 

Our meal program this year has changed and the updated cafe services are outlined here. All families should fill out an application for the free and reduced meal program even if you don’t think you’ll qualify. The school receives funding for all qualified families even if they choose not to participate in the program.  Please be sure to fill out the application linked here.

Last, just a word of caution. It’s probably best not to over schedule this first week of school and this first weekend. Students will be exhausted from re-engaging with a full-day of learning and school activities. Our school routine can be tiring after a summer break, and too much in the evenings or this first weekend could result in short tempers, exhausted brains, and overstimulation. Some down these first few weeks for students will be needed. 

Parents, your continued partnership and support are important factors in boosting student achievement and success. Together, I know we will make this year one of growth and achievement for all LPS students.

Hiring Update

 

Dear Parents, 

Great news! We were able to hire two new bus drivers in the last two weeks which means we will be able to maintain our four bus routes from last year. What a big relief for our school community. Thank you for spreading the word and helping us hire great people! More information about routes, pick-up and drop-off times, and bus assignments will be coming later. 

We are still in need of two more classroom aides, though, and an additional cashier for the cafe. If you know of anyone who loves kids, has positive energy, and would be a good fit for our school community, please encourage them to apply here. 

We are still interviewing candidates for the K-12 principal position and will announce a new principal as soon as we find the best fit candidate for LPS. In the meantime, please email or call me if you have any questions.
